Ahmedabad, June 16: A special NDPS court in Vadodara has sentenced a drug trafficker to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh in connection with an interstate smuggling case from 2021. This information was confirmed by an official on Monday.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) reported that Aslam Ahmed Pathan, a resident of Shahpur in Ahmedabad, was arrested in April 2021 with 99 grams of methamphetamine (MD). The NCB stated that this banned substance was being transported from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.
Earlier, on Friday, the NCB’s Jaipur zonal unit convicted an individual involved in the interstate smuggling of illegal opium. Opium is classified as a prohibited substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
A special judge in Ajmer found Jawaharlal, son of Sahiram from Dangiyawas in Jodhpur district, guilty in a significant drug trafficking case registered by the NCB’s Jodhpur unit.
According to the NCB, this case dates back to May 2020 when authorities received specific information regarding the smuggling of illegal opium in a truck. Acting on the tip-off and following legal procedures, NCB officials set up a blockade near the Geegal toll plaza in Ajmer.
During a search operation conducted on May 19, 2020, officials discovered a specially concealed box near the truck’s fuel tank. A total of 22 packets containing 40.850 kilograms of opium were recovered from the hidden box.
Subsequent investigations revealed that this restricted material had originated from Sherghati in Bihar and was being transported to Pali in Rajasthan. The investigation confirmed the accused’s involvement in the illegal transportation of narcotics.
After reviewing the evidence presented by the prosecution and hearing arguments from both sides, the special court found the accused guilty under the NDPS Act. The court sentenced Jawaharlal to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh.
