Kolkata, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata police have issued a fresh summons to Sumit Roy, the personal assistant of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, regarding a dispute over the removal of illegal hoardings. This incident traces back to August 27, when tensions escalated at the party’s office on Camac Street.
On Saturday, a police team from Shakespeare Sarani station visited Roy’s residence to deliver the new notice, instructing him to appear at the station on September 7 at noon. This marks the second time Roy will be questioned; he had previously been interrogated at the same station on September 2 for several hours.
Earlier this week, both Abhishek Banerjee and TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien were also questioned at Shakespeare Sarani police station regarding the same hoarding issue.
According to police sources, three FIRs have been filed in connection with the incident. One complaint was lodged by an officer from Shakespeare Sarani police station, another by an officer from the neighboring Park Street station, and the third by a Kolkata Municipal Corporation official.
A police spokesperson stated, “The questioning of Sumit Roy was related to the FIR filed based on a complaint from an officer at Shakespeare Sarani police station. On September 7, he will be questioned regarding the FIR filed by the municipal officer.”
This development comes shortly after the West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Department ordered the TMC faction led by Mamata Banerjee to vacate their office on Camac Street. The department cited inadequate fire safety measures in the building and instructed the owner to clear the seventh and eighth floors.
The conflict began on August 27 when municipal workers, accompanied by police, attempted to remove hoardings from the party office. TMC activists, allegedly led by Banerjee, O’Brien, and other party leaders, protested, resulting in clashes between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
The FIR filed at Shakespeare Sarani police station alleges that TMC workers assaulted on-duty officers and attempted to disrespect a female police officer. Among the three FIRs, two name Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Humayun Kabir, and Vaishwanar Chatterjee as accused. So far, 14 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
