Kolkata, May 19: A new division bench of the Kolkata High Court, comprising Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh, will hear the horrific rape and murder case involving a female doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital today. The hearing is scheduled to commence at 1 PM, according to the court’s cause list.
The previous division bench, led by Justice Rajshekhar Mantha, recused itself from the case on May 12, emphasizing the need for a swift hearing of this significant matter. Subsequently, Chief Justice Sujoy Paul assigned the case to the new bench on May 15.
While transferring the case, Justice Paul noted that all petitions related to the case, including one from the victim’s family seeking permission to visit the crime scene, will now be heard by the new division bench.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the case, did not raise any objections to the victim’s family’s petition for a site visit. However, the previous state government, led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had objected to it.
During the previous hearings, Justice Mantha questioned why the state government opposed the victim’s family’s petition when the CBI had no objections.
Recently, the new state government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, announced the suspension of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and two deputy commissioners, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta. This action was taken due to the city police’s negligent handling of the initial investigation before the CBI was assigned the case by the Kolkata High Court.
Adhikari also announced a decision allowing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to prosecute former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandeep Ghosh. Ghosh is implicated in both the financial irregularities case and the rape and murder of a junior doctor. The previous government had delayed this permission for an extended period.
