Chandigarh, September 3: The political landscape in Punjab has been shaken as Harsimrat Kaur Badal, a Member of Parliament from the Shiromani Akali Dal, leveled serious accusations against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his wife, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur. Kaur alleged that the Chief Minister’s wife accepted 5 crores to protect a rape accused.
Speaking to reporters, Harsimrat Kaur stated, “In Punjab, we often talk about respecting women, but the reality is that instead of honoring them, women are facing sexual assault. The Chief Minister’s wife is shielding the culprits. What could be more serious than the fact that the daughters of Punjab, who are victims of heinous crimes like exploitation and rape, see those who deserve capital punishment being protected by the state government, especially the Chief Minister and his wife, in exchange for money?”
She emphasized, “This issue is a matter of concern for the entire state. It is alarming for every parent in Punjab and across the country, especially given the deteriorating conditions in the state. Corruption has been rampant, but now, when the Chief Minister and his family are involved in helping a rapist escape in exchange for money, where can the people of Punjab, especially the daughters and families of rape victims, turn?”
Harsimrat further alleged that the accused is a serial rapist with two FIRs filed against him. She remarked, “This is such a serious criminal that there were two FIRs registered against him. He was in jail. The victim provided a statement under Section 164 in court. The law states that after a Section 164 statement, the accused cannot be granted bail without a trial.”
She questioned how the accused, arrested in May, managed to get released from jail in July and fled abroad. Harsimrat said, “The people of Punjab should be astonished that someone who was arrested in May is now out of jail and has even reached abroad by July. How is this possible? The Chief Minister’s wife has taken 5 crores.”
