New Delhi, March 12: The second phase of the budget session in Parliament has witnessed intense debates and disruptions. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, stating that despite being granted special permission to speak on the alleged shortage of LPG cylinders, Gandhi strayed from the topic.
Rijiju remarked, “We asked Rahul Gandhi in Parliament when he intended to raise the issue of LPG cylinders. At that time, discussions on other topics were ongoing in the Lok Sabha. We then stated that if the Speaker granted special permission, the government was ready to respond. The Petroleum Minister was immediately prepared to make a statement on this matter, and special permission was granted to Rahul Gandhi. It is important to note that this permission was given only to the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, allowing him to speak at 4 PM.”
He continued, “When Rahul Gandhi had the opportunity to speak, he began discussing issues unrelated to LPG. The Speaker urged him to remember that he was granted special permission solely to address the LPG issue, as the Leader of the Opposition. Typically, such permissions are not granted separately, yet he received it. Nevertheless, he raised topics beyond those mentioned in the notice, such as matters related to America and supply issues. This is very disappointing.”
Rijiju added, “We stood up to protest and requested him to please stick to the topic. The government also urged him, and the Speaker repeatedly reminded him to speak on the issue for which notice was given, but he did not comply.”
He explained that while Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri was providing detailed information to the House, Rahul Gandhi sent his MPs into the well of the House. Papers were torn and thrown, leading to a disruption that forced the proceedings to be suspended.
Rijiju noted, “Today, several Congress leaders met us and mentioned the suspension of eight MPs. However, if such behavior continues, altering and amending rules to grant special permission to the Leader of the Opposition, the public should reflect on the role of the Leader of the Opposition. The proceedings of the Lok Sabha will continue, as the Speaker stated today.”
