New Delhi, April 6: Across India, numerous Shakti Peeths and Siddh Peeths dedicated to Maa Jagdamba attract devotees seeking relief from their struggles. One such renowned and miraculous temple is located on a hill in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, where childless couples find the blessing of parenthood.
This temple has historical ties to the Mahabharata era, with remnants of the mighty Bhima still evident in the vicinity. We are referring to the Khallari Mata Temple.
Situated atop a hill in Khallari village, approximately 25 kilometers south of Mahasamund, the temple requires devotees to undertake a challenging climb. However, a ropeway facility is now available to assist visitors. To reach the temple, devotees must ascend over 800 steps, surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery. The view from the hilltop is truly captivating.
The temple’s history is intertwined with the Mahabharata. According to ancient legends, it was here that Bhima defeated the demon Hidimba and married Hidimba’s sister, as per the request of Mata Kunti.
Bhima is said to have rested in this area during his period of exile, with evidence still visible on the temple’s hill. Imprints of Bhima’s large feet can be found at the hill’s peak, along with Bhima’s cooking spot and his boat nearby. This is why the location is also known as Bhima Khoj.
Decades ago, Khallari served as the capital of King Brahmadev of the Haihayavansh dynasty, who initiated the construction of the temple. According to local lore, Maa Jagdamba would appear in the form of a maiden in the local market. One day, a wandering trader became infatuated with her beauty and followed her to the hilltop. Angered, Maa turned the trader to stone and established her presence at the hilltop as Khallari Maa.
Every year during the Chaitra Navratri, a significant number of devotees flock to this remote hilltop temple. An annual fair is held on the full moon day of the Chaitra month to celebrate this sacred site.
