In Kerala, the approach to worshiping Lord Shiva is notably distinct. Here, devotees revere him as a living force, seeking blessings through his divine incarnations. This tradition has been upheld for years at the Chettiyenchery Maheshwar Temple, located in Muringeri, where devotees believe Mahadev appears in human form annually.
Situated near Ancharakkandy in Kannur, the Chettiyenchery Maheshwar Temple is a local shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that worship here focuses not just on Lord Shiva but also on his intense and tranquil energies. This is why the powerful Kalratri Theyyam tradition is celebrated every April.
During this tradition, an unknown individual dons a heavy crown and adorns himself with vibrant colors. To embody Lord Shiva, the person also uses grass and leaves, symbolizing the union of Shiva and Parvati, where Parvati represents nature.
Dressed as the deity, the individual performs a midnight dance filled with fervor. A large number of devotees gather to seek blessings from Lord Shiva. Many express their wishes before the person embodying the deity, believing that he represents Lord Shiva and carries his energy. This tradition showcases vibrant colors and deep devotion.
The Chettiyenchery Maheshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, where both his peaceful and powerful forms are worshipped. During Navratri, the temple hosts the Navratri Maholsavam, featuring rituals like Ganapati Homam and Saraswati Puja. The tradition of lighting a thousand lamps, known as Sahasra Deepa Samarpanam, has been observed for years. The festival concludes on Vijayadashami with Vidyarambham, marking the beginning of children’s education.
