Keralas P. Rajeev Acknowledges CPI(M) Mistakes After Election Defeat

Thiruvananthapuram, June 16: Following the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) electoral defeat, former minister P. Rajeev openly acknowledged that several political assessments by the CPI(M) were incorrect. This includes the party’s campaign slogan, “Who else but LDF?” The party now believes this slogan failed to resonate with voters as anticipated.

Rajeev, a senior leader of CPI(M) and the industry minister in the second Pinarayi Vijayan government, was among the 13 ministers who lost their seats in the assembly elections. This defeat marks one of the most significant setbacks for the left in recent years.

His statements have sparked discussions in political circles, indicating an internal acknowledgment of mistakes following the loss. Rajeev noted that the party concluded the slogan created a different perception among the public.

Instead of strengthening the LDF’s appeal, it fostered a sentiment among voters that the coalition was presenting itself as the only option. He also admitted that the party failed to take a strong stance against SNDY Yogam’s general secretary Vellapally Natesan and mishandled the situation.

Rajeev stated, “It is not possible to revert to previous methods like pressing a button on a computer.” He emphasized that this experience has taught the party valuable lessons for managing similar situations in the future.

These remarks have reignited long-standing criticisms against the Kerala CPI(M), suggesting that the party often shifts its stance under political pressure. Critics cite the party’s initial opposition to tractors, computers, and self-financing professional colleges—issues that were later embraced as realities, with the party becoming a major supporter of them.

Opponents argue that the party’s approach has been to resist changes initially and later accept them when ground realities shift. Rajeev’s comments are viewed in this context as the party seeks to recalibrate its direction after an unexpected defeat.

Regarding the gold theft issue at Sabarimala, Rajeev remarked that the party should have focused on action rather than getting entangled in organizational technicalities.

This defeat occurred when Rajeev and his cabinet colleagues were confident that Pinarayi Vijayan would make history by winning a third consecutive term. Instead, the LDF faced a significant electoral setback, compelling the party to rethink its strategy, messaging, and organizational operations.
