Kerala Elections: Malappuram Collector Demands Report on Controversial Gulf Offer

Mumbai, March 25: In the midst of the electoral atmosphere in Kerala’s Malappuram district, the district collector has taken a firm stance on enforcing the model code of conduct. The district election officer and collector requested reports from monitoring officials on Wednesday. They were asked to determine whether a controversial proposal made by a senior leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) during the election campaign violates the code of conduct.

This issue is linked to the Thavanur assembly constituency, which is witnessing a tough electoral battle this time. Historically, this area has been a stronghold for leftist parties.

In this election, independent candidate and former minister K.T. Jaleel, who has served as an MLA four times, is in the fray. Jaleel gained significant recognition in 2006 when he defeated senior IUML leader P.K. Kunhalikutty. Since then, he has consistently won elections in this region and is aiming for victory again, though he faces a tough challenge this time.

Competing against him is Congress leader V.S. Joy, who is the president of the Malappuram District Congress Committee and has also been associated with the Youth Congress. The United Democratic Front (UDF) has a stronghold in all seven panchayats of this area, boosting Joy’s position.

Meanwhile, the most discussed statement in the electoral atmosphere comes from IUML leader C.P. Bava Haji. He announced that booth-level workers who help V.S. Joy secure the highest number of votes would be rewarded with a 15-day trip to the Gulf countries.

This statement has sparked controversy, prompting election officials to investigate whether this proposal constitutes a violation of the electoral code of conduct. The inquiry is ongoing, and further action will be taken based on the report’s findings.

In the meantime, the National Democratic Alliance is attempting to capitalize on its increasing vote share, adding another layer of uncertainty to this election.
