Haveri, August 14: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has responded to the state government’s proposed Karnataka Regulation of Use of Government Premises and Public Property Bill, 2026. This bill aims to curb the activities of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Bommai emphasized that the Constitution, crafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, grants every citizen personal and fundamental rights.
He stated, “Every individual should operate within the law without violating these rights.” Speaking to reporters on Friday, Bommai highlighted India’s rich heritage, vibrant culture, and the long-standing tradition of celebrating festivals. He asserted that such celebrations should unite people. Those attempting to disrupt these traditions through legislation are acting against the Constitution. Past attempts to impose similar restrictions have failed in courts, and this new effort will meet the same fate.
Commenting on the tribal welfare scam, Bommai pointed out that former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had admitted in the assembly to irregularities amounting to ₹89 crore in the Valmiki Development Corporation. He noted that the Enforcement Directorate has filed a chargesheet containing evidence of the source and destination of the funds. Despite this, the Congress party’s decision to reinstate B. Nagendra, who is facing charges, reflects a disregard for the Constitution and ethics. This arrogance is condemned by the BJP.
Regarding the Davanagere by-election, Bommai remarked that Minister Jameer Ahmed Khan has lost his credibility and respect within the Congress party and government. It is evident that he is being sidelined at every level, having refused to take on the responsibilities of the district in-charge minister. The next steps from him remain to be seen.
Bommai also condemned the incident where some individuals allegedly performed a ‘purification’ ritual following Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s speech at Ramleela Maidan in Uttarakhand. He stated, “Purifying a location after a senior leader’s speech is an unforgivable act. We will never accept this; it is an insult.”
On terrorism and security, Bommai referenced the arrests of suspects in Davanagere and Kalaburagi. He mentioned that intelligence reports indicate sleeper cells are becoming active again, with new recruitments underway. During their tenure, over 15 terrorists were arrested and imprisoned. However, the state police are hesitating to take strong action due to political pressure and a lack of political will, necessitating intervention from the National Investigation Agency. The government must not compromise national security under any circumstances.
In response to questions about cabinet developments, Bommai claimed that former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is unhappy with the cabinet expansion and decision-making process. His close associates are openly discussing his marginalization, indicating significant political developments within the Congress party.
