Karnataka MLC Elections: Congress and BJP-JD(S) Face Tough Competition for Key Seat

Bengaluru, June 18: Voting for seven Legislative Council seats allocated to the Karnataka Assembly is taking place today, June 18. This election is considered crucial in the state’s political landscape, as factors like numerical strength, cross-voting, and preference voting strategies could play a decisive role.

The voting process will run from 9 AM to 4 PM at the Bengaluru Assembly, followed by counting starting at 5 PM. A total of eight candidates are contesting for the seven available seats.

The main contest is between the ruling Indian National Congress, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, and the regional party Janata Dal (Secular). Congress has fielded five candidates, BJP has two, and JD(S) has one. Currently, Congress holds 134 seats, BJP has 62, and JD(S) has 18, with some seats occupied by independents and others.

To secure victory, any candidate will need at least 28 first-preference votes. At present, Congress is considered relatively safe for four seats, while BJP is expected to secure two. The seventh seat is anticipated to be highly contested, becoming a battleground between Congress and the BJP-JD(S) alliance.

Concerns about cross-voting have heightened anxiety in both camps. To maintain unity, Congress has organized training and strategic meetings for its legislators at the Wonderla Resort in Bidadi. Meanwhile, BJP and JD(S) are also keeping their legislators in secure locations to uphold discipline.

Public perception suggests that this election will test not just numerical strength, but also strategy, unity, and last-minute political maneuvers. The outcome of the seventh seat could significantly influence the state’s political direction and future coalition strategies.
