Karnataka Governor Accepts Siddaramaiahs Resignation, He Remains Caretaker Chief Minister

Bengaluru, May 29: Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot has accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Alongside this, the cabinet led by Siddaramaiah has been dissolved with immediate effect.

According to an official notification from the Governor’s office, Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation on May 28, 2026, which was accepted on May 29, 2026. The Governor made this decision under the powers conferred by Article 164(1) of the Constitution.

In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Governor Gehlot stated, “I have accepted your resignation with immediate effect. You will continue to serve as the caretaker Chief Minister until an alternative arrangement is made.”

In a letter sent to Karnataka’s Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, R. Prabhu Shankar, the Governor’s special secretary, confirmed that Siddaramaiah’s resignation has been accepted and his cabinet has been dissolved.

The notification issued by the Governor clarified that Siddaramaiah will remain as the caretaker Chief Minister until the process of selecting and swearing in a new Chief Minister is completed.

Following Siddaramaiah’s resignation, political activities in Karnataka have intensified. A meeting of the Congress Legislative Party is expected to be convened soon to elect a new leader. Sources indicate that the long-standing power struggle between Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah is a significant reason behind this development.

Insiders within the Congress party suggest that Siddaramaiah resigned on the advice of the party high command. The final decision regarding the new Chief Minister’s name is likely to be made by the party leadership in Delhi. However, D.K. Shivakumar is widely considered the frontrunner for the position.
