Bengaluru, March 13: Political tensions are rising in Karnataka regarding the state budget for 2026-27. BJP state president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra criticized the budget on Thursday, alleging that the Karnataka government is prioritizing borrowing over developmental projects.
He stated that the government’s primary achievement has been increasing debt, while it has failed to ensure overall development in the state.
During the assembly discussion on the budget, Vijayendra remarked that although the government claims to prioritize development, this is not reflected in the budget allocations.
He provided an example, noting that the Water Resources Department was allocated ₹22,190 crores in 2025-26, while the allocation for 2026-27 has only marginally increased to ₹22,430 crores. According to him, this slight increase is insufficient to accelerate large-scale development projects.
Vijayendra further explained that out of the total allocated amount, approximately ₹8,500 crores will be spent on salary payments and around ₹4,400 crores on interest repayments. This leaves only ₹9,290 crores available for actual development projects.
He pointed out that several significant projects initiated during the previous BJP government are currently 70 to 80 percent complete, but require around ₹90,000 crores to finish. He warned that if funds are not released on time, the cost of these projects could escalate to approximately ₹1.25 lakh crores.
The BJP leader emphasized that with only ₹9,290 crores available for capital works, completing these projects will be challenging. He also accused the state’s revenue expenditure of rising rapidly.
According to him, revenue expenditure rose from ₹2,15,584 crores in 2022-23 to ₹3,38,007 crores in 2026-27. He stated that while the government is borrowing heavily, these resources are not being effectively utilized for development.
Vijayendra also questioned the appointments of cabinet-rank officials by the state government. He noted that despite the ruling party having around 139 MLAs, several others are being granted cabinet-level status. He claimed that various heads of state and district-level guarantee schemes have also been given cabinet rank.
He asserted that nearly 144 individuals have been granted cabinet status, incurring monthly expenses of approximately ₹3 to ₹3.5 lakhs, including office facilities, salaries, and personal assistants.
