Karnataka Faces Commercial LPG Cylinder Shortage, Minister Calls for Cooperation from Hotels and Restaurants

Bengaluru, March 18: Karnataka’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa announced on Wednesday in the Legislative Council that the state is experiencing a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. He urged hotel owners, restaurant operators, and other business consumers to cooperate for a week until new supplies arrive.

The minister explained that due to supply disruptions, hotels, dhabas, industries, and other commercial establishments are receiving only a limited number of gas cylinders. The state requires approximately 40,000 commercial LPG cylinders daily, but currently, only about 1,000 cylinders are being provided to hotels.

Muniyappa stated that the situation could improve soon, as ships carrying LPG are en route. He mentioned, “About 16 ships are queued in Iran. Once they arrive, the issue will be resolved. The central government is in talks with Iran regarding this matter.”

Describing the situation as “war-like,” the minister appealed to hotel owners to temporarily adopt electric cooking alternatives. He assured that the government is working to arrange 10,000 to 15,000 cylinders and discussions with associations regarding distribution are ongoing.

He clarified that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders. The state consumes over 350,000 domestic cylinders daily, and companies like Indian Oil Corporation are ensuring their uninterrupted supply.

Muniyappa noted that the state needs around 44,000 commercial cylinders daily, but according to central guidelines, only 20 percent, or about 8,500 cylinders, can currently be provided. Nevertheless, the state has managed to arrange approximately 9,000 cylinders.

Prioritizing essential services, the government has allocated around 4,200 cylinders to educational institutions, hostels, and hospitals. Additionally, about 1,200 cylinders have been distributed to government enterprises, airports, railway stations, bus stands, Nandini outlets, and Indira Canteens.

Furthermore, around 500 cylinders are being supplied to seed processing, food processing, agriculture-related industries, geological parks, and sports hostels.

The minister assured that the government is closely monitoring the situation and is working with the central government and oil companies to normalize the supply of commercial LPG soon.
