Karnataka BJP Leader Alleges Phone Tapping at Raj Bhavan, Demands CBI Probe

Bengaluru: Karnataka Assembly’s Leader of Opposition and BJP leader R. Ashoka on Wednesday accused the Congress-led state government of phone tapping at Raj Bhavan. He said statements from state ministers have made this clear and demanded that the matter be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough probe.

Speaking in the state assembly, Ashoka referred to remarks made by the state’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil, who said that calls coming from Delhi to Raj Bhavan guide the Governor’s actions. Ashoka questioned, “This clearly indicates phone tapping at Raj Bhavan. Otherwise, how would ministers know about these calls?”

Ashoka also cited allegations from IT Minister Priyank Kharge, who claimed that calls were being made to Raj Bhavan from the RSS office. He asked, “Does this mean phones at the RSS office are also being tapped? Is this the kind of government we have, tapping even our phones?”

Recalling past events, Ashoka mentioned that the government led by Ramakrishna Hegde had fallen due to a phone tapping controversy. He warned, “This Congress-led government will also fall because of phone tapping. The state government must clarify its position.”

He further noted that the Law Minister had taken an oath in the Governor’s presence but was now speaking against him. Ashoka criticised the ministers, saying, “They should have maintained confidentiality. Having such a person as the state’s Law Minister is an insult to this assembly.”

Referring to a previous incident, Ashoka said an unidentified person had entered the assembly and remained seated, yet the Law Minister remained silent despite witnessing the event. He questioned, “Why was no action taken? Can anyone enter the assembly at will?”

Later, while speaking to reporters outside the assembly, Ashoka said that both Law Minister H.K. Patil and IT Minister Priyank Kharge had indirectly admitted to phone tapping. He described phone tapping as a criminal offence and said, “If ministers engage in phone tapping after taking oath under the Constitution, it is a contempt of the Constitution.” He demanded that the Law Minister apologise for this grave offence.

Ashoka reiterated the demand for a CBI investigation, stating that the state government is fully aware of what is happening inside Raj Bhavan. He also called on the government to release the list of central leaders and RSS members who allegedly made calls to Raj Bhavan.
