Smriti Mandhana Appointed as New Captain of Indian Womens Cricket Team

Mumbai, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday night that Smriti Mandhana will officially replace Harmanpreet Kaur as the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team. Mandhana has previously led the team in various formats and is now set to take on the role of full-time captain for white-ball cricket. She has already captained India in 18 T20 and 4 One Day International matches.

Over the years, Mandhana has emerged as a key player in Indian women’s cricket, playing a vital role in the team’s progress across all formats. As an experienced international cricketer, she has demonstrated her leadership skills in both domestic and franchise cricket, notably leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore to victory in the Women’s Premier League in 2024 and 2026.

In a statement, the BCCI highlighted Mandhana’s extensive experience, noting that she has been part of the Indian team since 2013. “She will now take on the responsibility of leading the team as it enters a new phase and aims to build on recent successes,” the statement read.

Expressing her gratitude upon her appointment, Mandhana said, “It is a great honor to take on the responsibility of leading India. Representing my country has always been significant to me, and now having the opportunity to lead the team is invaluable. I am thankful to the BCCI, the selectors, my teammates, and all those who have supported me on this journey. I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet for her dedication and contribution as captain over the years. I understand the responsibilities that come with this role and am eager to work with the team to advance Indian cricket.”

BCCI President Mithun Manhas congratulated Mandhana on her new role, emphasizing her integral part in Indian cricket. “Her experience and understanding of the game will be invaluable as she takes on this responsibility. I am confident she will fulfill this role with the same commitment and professionalism she has shown throughout her career,” he stated.

BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia also expressed his congratulations, noting Mandhana’s status as one of the most experienced players in the team. “She understands what it means to represent India. I trust she will use that understanding in her captaincy. Leading India is a significant responsibility, but Smriti has the experience and temperament to manage it well,” he added.
