Shreyas Iyers Record-Breaking Century Leads India to Victory in Lucknow

Lucknow, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Indian captain Shreyas Iyer delivered a spectacular performance on Tuesday, scoring an unbeaten 102 runs against the West Indies at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Iyer reached his century in just 43 balls, hitting 6 sixes and 10 fours, and in doing so, he set several records.

With this innings, Iyer climbed to fourth place among Indian captains for the most runs in T20 international cricket. The top three spots are held by Rohit Sharma, who has scored unbeaten innings of 121 against Afghanistan, 118 against Sri Lanka, and 111 against the West Indies.

Iyer is the only Indian captain to have scored a century while chasing a target. The previous highest score by an Indian captain in a T20 international while batting second was 94*, achieved by Virat Kohli against the West Indies in Hyderabad in 2019. Iyer also became the third Indian to score a T20 century against the West Indies, following Rohit Sharma (111*) and KL Rahul (110*).

During his innings, Iyer shared an unbeaten 137-run partnership with Ishan Kishan, marking the third-largest partnership for India in T20 internationals while chasing a target. The record for the highest partnership in this context belongs to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who put together 165 runs against the West Indies in 2023. Jaiswal also partnered with Gill for 156* runs against Zimbabwe in 2024.

The 137-run partnership is tied for the largest third-wicket partnership in T20 internationals for India, equaling the record set by Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav against New Zealand in 2026.

Iyer’s century, completed in just 42 balls, ranks as the third-fastest T20 century by a captain of a full-member team. He shares this record with Harry Brook, who also scored a century off 42 balls against Sri Lanka. The fastest centuries are held by Sikandar Raza (33 balls against Zimbabwe) and Rohit Sharma (35 balls against Sri Lanka).

Iyer now stands third in the list of Indian players with the highest scores while chasing in T20 cricket, following Suryakumar Yadav (117 against England) and KL Rahul (110* against the West Indies).

In the match held in Lucknow, the West Indies, after losing the toss, batted first and managed to score 171 runs in 19.1 overs. India, powered by Iyer’s explosive innings, chased down the target in just 14.4 overs with 8 wickets remaining.
