Lucknow, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The West Indies cricket team faced a tough start in their T20 series against India, losing the first match by 8 wickets at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6. Captain Shai Hope expressed disappointment over his team’s batting performance, admitting it lacked organization.
After losing the toss and opting to bat first, the West Indies were bowled out for 171 runs in just 19.1 overs. In response, India, led by a brilliant unbeaten century from captain Shreyas Iyer (102 not out), chased down the target in a mere 14.4 overs.
Following the defeat, Hope stated, “To be honest, we can discuss various aspects of the game, but it seems we didn’t score enough runs in the final overs. I think our batting was a bit disorganized. We were playing too aggressively. However, when playing in India, you need to post a good total on the board. You should have an extra cushion of about 20 or 30 runs, as defending a score becomes challenging due to the moisture in the outfield and the pitch conditions.”
Regarding team composition, he mentioned, “Sometimes you wish to have a few more all-rounders to bolster the bowling options, but we had to go with this combination today. We expected the players to perform their roles well, regardless of their skills. Unfortunately, we didn’t deliver enough to beat India today. As I said, defending a target here is always tough.”
Hope also reflected on the decision not to utilize spinners early on, saying, “Ideally, I would have liked our spinners to bowl eight overs each. At that time, we only had two spinners in the team. We thought if we could take a few more wickets and some left-handed batsmen came in later, Roston Chase could make an impact in the middle overs, but our plan didn’t work today. Looking back, there are many things that could be said. We could have used an extra spinner, but India played well and proved to be the better team.”
Despite the loss, Hope enjoys batting in India, adding, “I love batting here. Whenever I get the opportunity to play cricket in India, I am always excited.”
