Kamakhya Ropeway Project to Boost Religious Tourism in Assam

Guwahati, February 3: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the proposed Kamakhya Ropeway Project will significantly enhance religious tourism in the state. He emphasized that the project will simplify travel for millions of devotees visiting the revered Kamakhya Temple, one of the country’s most important Shakti Peeths.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister revealed that the ₹213 crore ropeway project has already received approval, and work will commence soon.

Sarma stated, “The Kamakhya Ropeway Project will greatly promote tourism, ease travel between the Shakti Peeth and the railway station, and provide an alternative route for millions of devotees visiting the sacred site.”

This project will offer a convenient transport option between the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill and the Guwahati railway station, reducing travel time and alleviating congestion on the narrow roads of the hill.

Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, the Kamakhya Temple is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in Eastern India. Dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, the temple attracts millions of devotees from across India and abroad each year, especially during the annual Ambubachi Mela, considered one of the largest religious events in the Northeast.

Beyond its religious significance, Kamakhya serves as a major tourism hub for Assam. The temple acts as a gateway for visitors exploring Guwahati, river tourism on the Brahmaputra, wildlife destinations like Kaziranga National Park, and the rich cultural landscape of the Northeast.

However, in recent years, the increasing number of visitors has put immense pressure on the road infrastructure leading to the temple. Officials hope that the ropeway project will address these challenges by providing a safe, eco-friendly, and efficient transport option for pilgrims, senior citizens, and tourists, while also enhancing the overall visitor experience.

This project aligns with the state government’s vision to strengthen spiritual tourism infrastructure and establish Assam as a key religious and cultural tourism center. Once operational, the ropeway is expected to reduce traffic, improve accessibility, and elevate Kamakhya’s status as a major pilgrimage and tourism destination in Northeast India.
