Beijing, September 2: On August 26, a sudden glacier landslide in Nepal unleashed a torrent of mud and rocks towards the China-Nepal border, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
Recently, the Nepali language service of China Media Group interviewed several leading Nepali experts in geology, climate, and remote sensing. Based on satellite images, ground surveys, and scientific data, these experts concluded that the disaster originated in Nepal.
They collectively called for a return to the fundamental principles of disaster response and climate governance, urging deeper cooperation between China and Nepal in disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as a united effort to protect their shared Himalayan home.
Dr. Amrit Sharma, an environmental science expert from Tribhuvan University, confirmed through satellite imagery and field research that the glacier collapse occurred in Nepal. The massive volume of rapidly moving ice peaked the flood, reaching the Chiyong Port in less than seven minutes, leaving no time for warnings in coastal areas.
Remote sensing expert Dr. Basant Neupane emphasized that although China was affected by this disaster, it provided immediate assistance to Nepal despite its own crisis. Rescue workers continued their efforts day and night, reflecting a true spirit of cooperation between neighboring countries.
Experts unanimously stated that global climate change is the root cause of this disaster. Continuous carbon emissions are accelerating the melting of Himalayan glaciers, making this region, known as the “Third Pole,” highly vulnerable to climate disasters.
