Thiruvananthapuram: Justice Soumen Sen was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court on Saturday. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy at a ceremony held at the Lok Bhavan. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was also present on the occasion.
The oath-taking event saw the presence of several prominent figures from the judicial, administrative, and political spheres of the state. Among those attending were Assembly Speaker A.N. Shamsheer, Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V. Rajesh, Industry and Law Minister P. Rajeev, MLA P. Prasant, BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, and other dignitaries.
Additionally, Chief Secretary Dr. A. Jayathilak and Director General of Police Ravada Chandrasekhar were present. Senior judges including Justice A.K. Jaishankaran Nambiar, Justice Anil K. Narendran, Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari, Justice Devan Ramachandran, Justice K. Natarajan, and Justice K. Babu also attended the ceremony.
Former Chief Justices of the Kerala High Court, Justice (Dr.) Manjula Chellur and Justice Indira Banerjee, were among the distinguished guests. The state’s Advocate General Gopalakrishna Kurup was also in attendance.
The appointment of Justice Soumen Sen was notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India. The notification stated that the President, exercising powers under Article 222 of the Constitution, transferred Justice Sen from the Meghalaya High Court to the Kerala High Court as Chief Justice, effective from January 9, 2026, following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar. This transfer and appointment followed recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on December 18, 2025.
Justice Soumen Sen succeeded Justice Nitin Jamdar as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court upon his retirement.
