Mumbai, March 23: In a dramatic encounter on Sunday night in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, police apprehended a notorious smuggler, Arif, who had a bounty of ₹25,000 on his head. He was found injured during the confrontation.
According to CO Pratima Verma, this operation was carried out by a joint team from Mirganj and Machhlishahr police. During the exchange of fire, Arif sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg, leading to his capture. However, one of his accomplices managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
The incident occurred around 10:45 PM when the Mirganj police, along with the station chief and the in-charge of Janghayi, were checking suspicious vehicles in Godhana Market. They received information from the control room that two suspicious individuals were fleeing on a motorcycle from Bandhwa Market towards Janghayi, pursued by Machhlishahr police. Acting promptly, the Mirganj police set up a blockade towards Bandhwa.
At the Chitaw-Bhatewara road near the Composite School under the Gram Sabha Chokhi Khurd, police attempted to stop the motorcycle-riding suspects. Realizing they were cornered, the criminals opened fire on the police team. In response, the police returned fire, injuring Arif, who was subsequently arrested, while the other suspect fled the scene.
The arrested individual, identified as 32-year-old Arif from Lamhan, Mahrajganj, was found in possession of a country-made pistol, two cartridges, and a motorcycle.
Investigations revealed that Arif was wanted in multiple criminal cases. He had charges of pickup theft and buffalo theft registered against him at the Mirganj police station. Additionally, he was also wanted in another case at the Machhlishahr police station. A reward of ₹25,000 had been announced for his capture.
Police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections and are actively searching for the escaped accomplice.
