JP Nadda Criticizes Opposition for Lack of Democratic Engagement

New Delhi, March 30: In a heated exchange in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the ruling party and the opposition clashed sharply. Leader of the House JP Nadda leveled serious accusations against the Congress-led India Alliance, stating that the opposition shows no interest in debate or respect for democratic values and parliamentary procedures.

He emphasized that the behavior of opposition parties indicates a disregard for the Constitution and the rules governing parliamentary proceedings. Nadda claimed that when a member was given time to speak during Zero Hour, opposition MPs continuously disrupted the session.

Earlier, BJP MP Dr. K. Lakshman raised the issue of excluding the Muslim community from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category during Zero Hour. He argued that OBC reservations should benefit only socially backward classes and should not be based on religion. This sparked chaos in the House, as opposition leaders sought to express their views, which was not permitted under the rules. Consequently, the opposition staged a walkout.

Nadda remarked that the opposition’s behavior signals a lack of faith in democratic and parliamentary processes. He reiterated that the government is ready to discuss any topic, but the opposition appears to be evading debate. He accused some opposition parties of engaging in vote bank politics and appeasement, particularly concerning the Muslim community.

He also pointed out that there is no constitutional provision for granting reservations to Muslims in the OBC category, a stance previously upheld by the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Citing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s views, he noted that the OBC category was originally determined based on social and educational backwardness.

Nadda affirmed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government is open to discussing any issue. He urged the opposition for constructive participation. In conclusion, he condemned the opposition’s conduct as disgraceful, asserting that such politics harms democracy. He advised the opposition to move forward with new ideas and engage in meaningful debate.
