Patna, August 9: Central Minister and leader of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), Jitan Ram Manjhi, has once again raised concerns regarding the implementation of the liquor ban law in Bihar. He emphasized that while the prohibition law should be sound, its flawed execution has led to various issues. Manjhi urged Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to streamline the enforcement of the liquor ban.
Manjhi stated, “The prohibition law must be effective. Due to discrepancies in its implementation, numerous problems arise.” He suggested that the government should create a system in Bihar that does not inconvenience the public and prevents misuse of the law. Citing the liquor ban model in Gujarat, he advocated for its adoption in Bihar as well.
The central minister remarked, “In the place where Gandhi Ji was born, there is also a liquor ban, but the people there are not disheartened. We have been saying for a long time that the Gujarat model of liquor prohibition should be implemented in Bihar.” Manjhi also expressed concern over cases filed against the poor and marginalized due to the liquor ban law. He alleged that some officials exploit the flaws in enforcement to profit, ensnaring the impoverished in legal troubles.
He noted, “Due to the liquor ban, officials are making money and trapping the poor. Currently, around 11-12 lakh people are facing legal cases, including six to seven of our impoverished individuals.” Manjhi urged Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to ensure that the implementation of the liquor ban law is such that it is adhered to without harassing innocent people.
He called for a review of the liquor ban law by the government to address existing shortcomings in its enforcement. Additionally, he stressed the need for accountability among officials to prevent misuse of the law and to protect the poor from unnecessary legal entanglements.
