Ranchi, January 4: Jharkhand is experiencing severe cold and shivering due to a cold wave sweeping across the region. The Meteorological Centre in Ranchi has issued a warning that on Monday, a cold wave condition is likely to prevail in the north-western and central parts of the state, while dense fog may severely disrupt daily life and traffic in several districts.
Accordingly, the weather department has declared a yellow alert for Monday. It forecasts a sharp drop in minimum temperatures in parts of Garhwa, Palamu, Latehar, Lohardaga, Chatra, Koderma, Hazaribagh, and Gumla districts. Temperatures in Gumla and Latehar could fall to as low as 5 degrees Celsius, causing intense cold during early mornings and nights.
Chilly north-western winds are expected to increase the cold in open areas. Additionally, dense fog warnings have been issued for the northern and north-western districts on Monday. Visibility in Sahibganj, Godda, Pakur, Dumka, Deoghar, Giridih, and Palamu divisions may reduce to between 50 and 200 metres. This reduced visibility could adversely affect road and rail traffic.
The weather office has advised drivers to exercise extra caution, drive slowly, and avoid unnecessary travel. Over the past 24 hours, the weather remained dry across the state. Chaibasa recorded a maximum temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius, while Latehar registered a minimum of 6.3 degrees Celsius. The capital city, Ranchi, saw a minimum temperature of 10.7 degrees Celsius, which is 1.6 degrees above normal, but a decline is expected starting Monday.
The Meteorological Centre indicated a gradual improvement in minimum temperatures after January 6. However, no respite from the cold and fog is anticipated in the immediate days ahead. Southern Jharkhand districts such as East and West Singhbhum and Simdega are expected to experience relatively milder cold.
The department has urged people to take adequate precautions against the cold, especially for the elderly and children. Farmers are also advised to protect their crops from potential frost damage by taking necessary measures.
