Washington, November 4 (Daily Kiran): Billionaire philanthropist and Jeff Bezos’ former wife, MacKenzie Scott, has donated $80 million (approximately ₹709 crore) to Howard University, marking one of the largest contributions in the university’s 158-year history. The donation comes without any conditions, allowing the university to use the funds as it deems necessary.

According to Howard University, $63 million from the donation will support general university operations, while $17 million will be directed towards its College of Medicine.
A Timely Boost Amid Funding Delays
As reported by The Times of India, the university’s interim president described the donation as a “historic investment” that will not only sustain Howard’s ongoing progress but also enhance student support, campus infrastructure, and help build a reserve fund.
He added that the contribution arrived at a “critical time”, as Howard University has been facing delays in receiving its annual federal funding due to the U.S. government shutdown.

Continuing Her Philanthropic Vision
This contribution is part of MacKenzie Scott’s continued efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion through strategic giving. In recent years, she has made significant donations to institutions that assist low-income and minority students.
Reduction in Amazon Holdings
Scott’s donation comes shortly after reports revealed that she reduced her stake in Amazon by $12.6 billion, bringing her estimated net worth to $35.6 billion. She has pledged to give away most of her wealth and, over the past five years, has already donated more than $19 billion to over 2,000 organizations worldwide.
Howard University officials have hailed the contribution as a transformative gift that will strengthen its academic excellence and expand opportunities for underrepresented communities.
