Japans Defense Minister to Strengthen Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific with Visits to Australia and India

Tokyo, August 16: Japan is eager to enhance defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. This week, Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi will visit two key allies in the area. After Australia, he will arrive in India to meet his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, Koizumi will engage with his counterparts in both countries. The aim is to strengthen security cooperation, including joint development of defense equipment.

On Tuesday, Koizumi will arrive in Canberra, Australia’s capital, where he will discuss bilateral security and defense cooperation with Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles. A central focus of their talks will be Australia’s plan to acquire Japan’s Mogami-class frigates and further enhance defense collaboration between the two nations.

The Japanese Defense Ministry has highlighted the significance of Koizumi’s visit for defense relations between Japan and Australia. Both countries are consistently taking steps to bolster security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The acquisition of Mogami-class warships is a crucial part of this strategic partnership. In April, they finalized a contract for the construction of the first three vessels for the Australian Navy.

Following his time in Australia, Koizumi will head to India, where he will hold his first official meeting with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. Discussions will focus on joint development of drones based on the summit agreement made in July, as well as promoting defense equipment and technical cooperation for maritime security. They will also address the upcoming two-plus-two bilateral security and strategic cooperation meeting of foreign and defense ministers scheduled to take place in Tokyo later this year.

According to the Japanese Defense Ministry, Koizumi will also visit an Indian naval base. Koizumi is the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and is considered a potential candidate for Japan’s prime ministership in the future. The meetings are expected to cover broader security cooperation and the evolving strategic landscape in the Indo-Pacific region.
