Gautam Gambhirs Iconic Innings: Remembering His 137 Runs that Saved India in New Zealand

Celebrating Gautam Gambhirs remarkable 137-run innings in New Zealand that helped India avoid defeat during a crucial Test match.

New Delhi, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Gautam Gambhir, the current head coach of the Indian cricket team, is celebrated not just for his coaching but also for his outstanding playing career. Known as one of the finest openers of his time, Gambhir’s most memorable innings include his 75 runs in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in 2007 and his match-winning 97 runs in the 2011 ODI World Cup final against Sri Lanka. However, he also delivered several remarkable performances in Test cricket, showcasing his batting prowess.

Among these, his innings of 137 runs at Napier, New Zealand, in 2009 stands out as one of the finest moments of his Test career. This innings played a crucial role in saving India from defeat. In that match, New Zealand batted first, declaring their innings at a formidable 619 runs for the loss of nine wickets. India struggled in their first innings, being bowled out for just 305 runs, which forced them to follow on.

To avoid certain defeat, India needed a strong start in their second innings. Gambhir opened the batting alongside Virender Sehwag, who scored 22 runs before losing his wicket. Gambhir then formed a crucial partnership with Rahul Dravid, adding 133 runs for the second wicket. They faced 376 balls together. After Dravid’s dismissal, Gambhir teamed up with Sachin Tendulkar, contributing an additional 97 runs for the third wicket over 191 balls. He later added 96 runs with VVS Laxman for the fourth wicket, facing 289 balls in total. Gambhir was eventually out after playing 436 balls, scoring 137 runs.

After Gambhir’s departure, VVS Laxman, who remained unbeaten on 124 runs from 212 balls, along with Yuvraj Singh, who scored 54 runs off 63 balls, successfully batted out the remaining time, ensuring India saved the match. By the end, India finished with a score of 476 runs for the loss of four wickets.

While Dravid, Sachin, Laxman, and Yuvraj all played commendable innings, it was Gambhir’s 137 runs, achieved over 643 minutes, that were pivotal in averting a defeat for India. This innings is widely regarded as one of the highlights of his Test career.

Between 2003 and 2016, the left-handed opener played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20 matches for India, scoring 4,154 runs in Tests with nine centuries and 22 half-centuries. In ODIs, he amassed 5,238 runs, including 11 centuries and 34 half-centuries, while in T20s, he scored 932 runs with seven half-centuries. Gambhir played a significant role in leading India to victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup before retiring in 2018.

Now, as a coach, Gambhir is in his second innings in Indian cricket. He took on the role of head coach on July 9, 2024, and under his guidance, the Indian team has already secured victories in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026. His tenure as head coach is set to continue until the ODI World Cup in 2027.

Born on October 14, 1981, in Delhi, Gambhir is celebrating his 45th birthday today.
