Mumbai, Jamnagar, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit Mumbai and Jamnagar next week to discuss enhanced energy cooperation. The U.S. State Department announced that this visit will take place from October 17 to 22, coinciding with a critical deadline for imposing penalties on countries purchasing energy from Russia.
In a media note, the department outlined that Rubio will engage with senior government officials to strengthen the U.S.-India strategic partnership. Discussions will also cover regional and global issues, alongside potential avenues for improved energy collaboration.
Additionally, Rubio will meet with business leaders to promote opportunities for commercial investment and economic cooperation. Jamnagar, located in Gujarat, is home to Reliance Industries’ refining hub, one of the largest refining complexes in the world. However, the State Department did not specify the reasons for selecting this city for the visit.
Rubio’s trip comes just days after the October 18 deadline related to the Graham Act, which addresses duties on countries that buy Russian energy. Since 2022, India has emerged as one of the largest buyers of Russian crude oil, a situation that has strained relations with Washington.
The State Department emphasized the importance of this diplomatic platform in promoting a more peaceful and prosperous future for the U.S. and Central Asian countries. Rubio will hold bilateral meetings with senior officials from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
During this historic visit, Rubio will lead a U.S. commercial delegation comprising over 200 business leaders, marking the start of a new era of robust commercial cooperation between the U.S. and Central Asia. In May, Rubio described India as a “great partner,” highlighting that his visit would focus on energy and the Quad alliance.
Before arriving in India, Rubio will participate in the C5+1 ministerial meeting in Samarkand. This diplomatic platform brings together the United States and the five Central Asian republics: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Both India and the U.S. characterize their relationship as a comprehensive global strategic partnership encompassing defense, trade, technology, and energy.
