Japan and Sweden Secure Knockout Stage Berths with 1-1 Draw in FIFA World Cup

Arlington, June 26: The thrilling match between Japan and Sweden in the FIFA World Cup 2026 ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite the result at Dallas Stadium, both teams have successfully secured their spots in the Round of 32.

Before the match, Japan knew that a draw against Sweden would suffice to advance to the knockout stage. On the other hand, Sweden needed a victory to secure second place in their group. Nevertheless, Sweden also progressed by being one of the eight best third-placed teams.

Japan, finishing second in Group F, will face Brazil on June 30, while Sweden awaits its next opponent. Both teams created several opportunities in the first half, but neither managed to score. Japan maintained control of the ball from the start, consistently pressuring Sweden’s defense. Daizen Maeda’s header went just wide, while attempts from Yukinari Sugawara and Keito Nakamura were expertly saved by Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Jetterström.

In the second half, Japan finally took the lead. In the 56th minute, Daizen Maeda finished brilliantly after a superb through pass from Ritsu Doan, giving Japan a 1-0 advantage. However, Sweden equalized shortly after. In the 62nd minute, Anthony Elanga made a fantastic run down the right wing, cut inside, and fired a powerful shot with his left foot into the corner of the net.

Following the equalizer, Sweden pushed hard for a win. Star striker Alexander Isak attempted to score with a header, but Japan’s goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made a fantastic save, deflecting the ball over the bar. Suzuki also denied another dangerous attempt from Elanga, keeping Japan safe from defeat. Japan finished second in Group F, while Sweden advanced to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
