Côte dIvoire Secures Historic Knockout Stage Spot in FIFA World Cup 2026

New Delhi, June 26: In a remarkable display, Côte d’Ivoire triumphed over Curaçao with a score of 2-0 in the Group E match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. This victory marks the first time Côte d’Ivoire has advanced to the knockout stage in World Cup history.

From the outset, Côte d’Ivoire dominated the match, consistently applying pressure on Curaçao’s defense. Their efforts quickly paid off when Nicolas Pépé scored a stunning goal in the 7th minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead. Pépé converted a precise pass from Yan Diomande into a brilliant goal, setting a record for the fastest goal in Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup history.

Despite trailing 0-1 at halftime, Curaçao attempted to stage a comeback, but Côte d’Ivoire’s solid defense thwarted their efforts. The second half saw Côte d’Ivoire maintain their dominance. In the 64th minute, Pépé doubled the lead, thanks to a fantastic play by Ibrahim Sangaré, who broke through Curaçao’s defense and set up Pépé for an easy finish.

Pépé’s second goal sealed the victory for Côte d’Ivoire. Although Curaçao made several attempts to reduce the deficit, they were unsuccessful. Three teams from Group E have now advanced to the Round of 32, with Germany finishing first, while Côte d’Ivoire secured second place to earn their knockout stage ticket. Ecuador also caused a major upset by defeating Germany 2-1, advancing to the next round.

After the match, Pépé expressed his joy over the team’s memorable performance. He stated, “It’s a matter of pride and happiness. We have qualified for the knockout stage, which is a proud moment for the people of Côte d’Ivoire. My two goals? It’s all thanks to the team. In the first goal, Yan Diomande did a great job setting me up. The second goal was a fantastic pass from Ibrahim Sangaré, and I just had to get my foot on it. We will try to go as far as we can; we have good players to achieve that.”
