Skopje, July 21: President Droupadi Murmu addressed the Parliament of North Macedonia on Tuesday. She stated that India no longer views Southeast Europe as a remote region but as an emerging center for development and innovation.
President Murmu remarked, “We are meeting at a crucial juncture in human history. The balance of political and economic power in the world is shifting. In this new era, India sees Southeast Europe not as a marginalized area but as a significant region filled with growth and new possibilities.”
She emphasized that India does not regard North Macedonia as a distant country but as a vital partner capable of playing a key role in creating a stable, multipolar, and prosperous global future.
The President highlighted that North Macedonia is at the center of this transformation. She described it as an important gateway connecting the Mediterranean and Central Europe, as well as the East and West.
“Our relationship began over two thousand years ago when traders from this region came to India. At that time, trade, philosophy, and art connected our ancient civilizations. This historical bond continues to thrive today through cultural exchanges. Your Eastern traditions are deeply intertwined with India’s diversity and inclusive mindset,” she stated.
President Murmu affirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties through trade and investment. She referenced the ancient Indian philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ meaning ‘the whole world is one family.’
She added, “We are committed to enhancing our cooperation at the bilateral level and with the entire region. This includes new opportunities for trade and investment. No country can progress alone. India’s ancient civilization is based on the principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.’”
“In a time when the world faces conflict and economic division, this philosophy inspires us to build bridges of relationships rather than walls. We must think not only about today but also about the future. Let us transform our historical and cultural ties into a robust economic partnership. As two democratic nations connected by history and forward-thinking, we can pave a new path of peace and prosperity for our people.”
During her address, the President mentioned that she would pay tribute to Skopje’s most famous daughter, Mother Teresa, on Wednesday. She noted that Mother Teresa made India her home and announced plans to present a bust of Mahatma Gandhi, whose ideals of peace and non-violence continue to unite the world.
On this occasion, North Macedonia’s Prime Minister, Kristijan Mickoski, hosted a luncheon in honor of President Murmu. Several ministers and members of parliament from North Macedonia were also present. During their discussions, both leaders reiterated their commitment to further strengthening the close ties between their countries based on shared democratic values and mutual respect.
