Guwahati: After a powerful innings of 76 runs in the second T20 match against New Zealand, Ishan Kishan has stated that his main goal is to enjoy the game while returning to the basics and focusing on what truly matters.
Having made a comeback to Team India after nearly two years, Ishan is gearing up for the T20 World Cup 2026, which will begin on February 7. The tournament will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
In the T20 match played at Raipur, Ishan played a brilliant innings that helped India secure a commanding 7-wicket victory. His outstanding performance earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Before the third T20 match, Ishan reflected on his previous innings, saying, “I was just hoping to get in, stay calm, watch every ball, and play the necessary cricketing shots.”
Chasing a huge target of 209 runs, the Indian team had lost two wickets for just 6 runs. At this crucial moment, Ishan’s aggressive yet calculated batting steered the team towards victory.
Ishan explained, “When you are chasing a total like 209, it is important to score as many runs as possible in the powerplay. At the same time, I was thinking not to lose my wicket while playing shots, but also to play some good ones. I found it easier to play through the middle as a left-handed batsman, given how New Zealand was bowling. So, I aimed to score as many runs as possible in that zone.”
The 27-year-old had to wait a long time for his return to the Indian team. He impressed consistently at the domestic level, playing for Jharkhand, and was instrumental in helping his team win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year. This strong domestic performance earned him a place in the squad for the T20 series against New Zealand and the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Speaking about his mindset, Ishan said, “I just had one question in my mind—whether I could do it again or not. If I did, it would boost my confidence even more. My entire focus is on enjoying every moment. I am just trying to perform well. My goal is to enjoy cricket, go back to basics, take a step back, and focus on what’s important for me.”
Regarding his feelings about returning to the team and whether he felt any pressure before his comeback, Ishan shared, “After seeing and going through everything, I don’t think I have changed much. I don’t get too happy or too sad. The World Cup is ahead, and what we need to do there is more important. I am just thinking about how we can win this trophy and what improvements we need to make.”
