Tel Aviv, June 8: In response to attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran launched ballistic missiles targeting several areas in Israel on Sunday night. The Karun Petrochemical Company in Mahshahr, Khuzestan province, was hit, causing significant damage to the facility, according to Iranian media reports. Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a security cabinet meeting.
A security official from Khuzestan province confirmed that part of the petrochemical plant was damaged, though details on the extent of the damage and casualties remain unclear.
Mahshahr is recognized as a major petrochemical and industrial hub in Iran, with its energy and chemical sectors playing a crucial role in the national economy.
The Israeli military has acknowledged the attack on the petrochemical complex, stating that the Israeli Air Force targeted multiple sites within the facility. A brief military statement indicated that more detailed information regarding the operation would be released later, but specifics on the attack’s scope and impact have not yet been disclosed.
This military action comes just two months after a ceasefire was established in April between Iran and Israel. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the missile strikes were in retaliation for Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon. Following these strikes, Israel’s air defense system was activated.
In response, Israel initiated counterattacks within Iran a few hours later. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), they targeted military installations in western and central Iran.
Reports from the Iranian news agency IRNA indicated explosions in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan. The IRGC claimed that Israel utilized air-launched ballistic missiles in these attacks.
Iran asserted that it struck the Nevatim and Tel Nof air bases in Israel. The IRGC stated, “This operation was a response to missile attacks on several radar sites in Iran conducted by the Israeli regime.”
The IDF reported that it intercepted missiles launched from Iran in mid-air on Monday morning.
Amid these escalating tensions, Prime Minister Netanyahu has called an important security cabinet meeting scheduled for 1:30 PM Indian time. According to Israeli media, only select senior ministers and top officials involved in security matters will attend. The meeting is expected to discuss Iran’s attacks, Israel’s counteractions, and future military strategies.
