New Delhi, March 13: Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, indicated on Friday that Indian ships may soon be granted safe passage through the Hormuz Strait amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Ambassador Fathali emphasized the shared interests between India and Iran, stating, “India is our friendly nation. You will see this within two to three hours. We believe that Iran and India have common interests in the region.”
He also noted that the Indian government has provided assistance to Iran in several areas following the war.
This statement comes a day after Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi announced that Tehran has allowed vessels from certain countries to pass through the Hormuz Strait.
Takht-Ravanchi clarified that allegations of Iran laying mines in the waterway are unfounded, asserting that the route was closed during the war.
He stated that Iran will not allow hostile nations to use this strait. According to him, countries involved in aggressive actions against Iran will not benefit from safe passage through this route.
The Hormuz Strait is one of the world’s most crucial maritime trade routes, accounting for nearly 20 percent of global oil and gas exports.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported on Thursday that the number of Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf remains at 28, with ongoing monitoring of the safety of all ships and their crews.
Among these, 24 vessels are located west of the Hormuz Strait, carrying 677 Indian sailors, while four ships are east of the strait, with 101 Indian sailors on board.
According to the ministry, relevant authorities, ship managers, and recruitment agencies are collaborating with Indian embassies and local administrations to ensure the safety of the vessels and sailors, providing medical assistance when necessary.
Additionally, the safety advisory issued by the Director General of Shipping on February 28, 2026, remains in effect. The ministry stated that it is continuously monitoring the maritime situation in the Persian Gulf and has strengthened surveillance and preparedness measures in response to changing conditions.
