New Delhi, July 19: Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, met with Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan during his visit to India. The meeting took place at the Vice President’s residence and featured extensive and positive discussions.
The Vice President’s office shared details of the meeting on the social media platform X, noting that both leaders discussed enhancing the historic ties between India and Tanzania. They acknowledged that the relationship between India and Zanzibar extends beyond diplomatic connections, rooted in centuries-old maritime links, cultural exchanges, and strong people-to-people connections.
According to a statement, “Both sides deliberated on ways to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, development assistance, tourism, the blue economy, education, technology, and multilateral platforms. They reiterated their commitment to work together to achieve shared development goals.”
During the meeting, President Mwinyi expressed his enthusiasm for visiting the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) campus. He described the establishment of the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus with India’s assistance as a historic initiative for bilateral academic cooperation.
The IIT Madras Zanzibar campus stands as a significant example of educational and technological collaboration between India and Africa. This initiative is seen as a major step towards providing youth with high-quality education and modern technical knowledge.
President Mwinyi also praised India’s support through water projects, scholarships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and programs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC).
Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan remarked, “India is committed to strengthening its partnership with Tanzania and Zanzibar. Both countries can achieve shared development and prosperity goals by enhancing cooperation in priority areas.”
The relationship between India and Tanzania is a vital pillar of stability, development, and mutual cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. Mwinyi is on an official visit to India from July 17 to 20.
