New Delhi, March 8: The Indian Navy’s sail training ship, INS Tarangini, arrived in Colombo on March 6, 2026, after completing maritime training with the Sri Lankan Navy’s Sea Riders.
Three officers and 26 trainees from the Sri Lanka Navy and Maritime Academy boarded the ship for the training deployment in Trincomalee. During the voyage, the trainees received intensive sail training and became familiar with the intricacies of rigging sails and duties under sail.
This journey provided the trainees with extensive opportunities to operate and manage the ship under the guidance of the crew. The training deployment further strengthened mutual learning and interoperability between the two navies, promoting maritime cooperation and training relations.
Upon arrival in Colombo, the ship was welcomed by representatives from the Sri Lankan Navy and officials from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka. The commanding officer of INS Tarangini met with Rear Admiral Jagath Kumara, the commander of the Western Naval Area, to discuss ways to enhance naval cooperation and share best practices.
During the three-day port stay, the ship will conduct various bilateral training activities with the Sri Lankan Navy. In addition to professional exchanges, crews from both navies will participate in friendly sports competitions, joint yoga sessions, and awareness activities.
Earlier in Trincomalee, Commodore Dinesh Bandara, the commandant of the Sri Lanka Navy and Maritime Academy, visited the ship and interacted with the crew and the Sri Lankan Navy Sea Riders on board. This training deployment serves as a significant chapter in the growing maritime relations between India and Sri Lanka.
