New Delhi, March 31: IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, has appointed William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), pending regulatory approval. This announcement follows the resignation of Peter Elbers earlier this month.
In a statement, the airline noted that Walsh’s tenure at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will conclude on July 31, 2026, allowing him to officially join IndiGo by August 3, 2026.
Known as ‘Willy,’ Walsh is currently the Director General of IATA. He previously served as the CEO of British Airways and the International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes airlines such as Aer Lingus, Iberia, Level, and Vueling.
Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of IndiGo, stated that Walsh’s extensive experience in large-scale airline operations and his ability to navigate complex market conditions make him an ideal candidate for this role.
Notably, Elbers resigned earlier this month after leading IndiGo for nearly three years, during which the airline experienced significant growth, despite facing its largest flight crisis in December.
Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, emphasized that the company is entering a new phase of change and growth, making Walsh’s involvement crucial at this time.
In his new role, Walsh will be responsible for the overall operations and strategic direction of the airline. His focus will be on enhancing operational performance, advancing network and commercial strategies, and improving customer experience.
Walsh remarked that the aviation sector is rapidly evolving, and IndiGo is well-positioned to play a leading role in this transformation. He expressed his commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the organization.
