Charity Commissioner Closes Investigation on 1989 Share Transfer: Tata Trust

Mumbai, September 3: Tata Trust announced on Thursday that the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra has closed the investigation into a complaint regarding the transfer of 833 shares of Tata Sons Private Limited from Navalbai Ratan Tata Trust to Naval H. Tata in 1989.

The Trust stated that the recent order validated their position that the allegations surrounding the share transfer were baseless, unverified, and malicious.

This complaint was filed via an email sent by Vijay Singh, a trustee of Navalbai Ratan Tata Trust, on June 10, 2026.

According to Tata Trusts, the Charity Commissioner conducted a thorough examination of the issues raised in the complaint, as well as the responses and related documents submitted by Navalbai Ratan Tata Trust.

The Commissioner concluded that the sale was conducted in compliance with legal requirements and that the share transfer followed proper documentation procedures.

Additionally, the order indicated that the Trust received fair returns based on an assessment approved by the Wealth Tax Commissioner. This transaction also benefited the Trust, as reflected in the balance sheet for the financial year ending March 31, 1989.

The shares were transferred with the condition that they would not be sold to any third party and would remain within the recipient’s family.

Tata Trust noted that the investigation also found that the transfer adhered to all applicable legal provisions at the time.

Therefore, the Charity Commissioner deemed that no further investigation was necessary regarding this share transfer under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act of 1950.

Tata Trust also referenced the Commissioner’s remarks on Vijay Singh’s conduct. The Commissioner noted that Singh did not share his email with the Trust, indicating an attempt to conceal it from other trustees and the entire Trust. The Commissioner considered this behavior inconsistent with that of a trustee of Navalbai Ratan Tata Trust.

Tata Trust described these allegations as part of a planned, malicious campaign aimed at tarnishing the institution’s image.
