New Delhi, June 30: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has officially launched in Greece, announced Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday. This new service enables eligible customers to transfer money instantly, securely, and conveniently, while significantly reducing transaction costs compared to traditional methods.
In a post on social media platform X, Goyal highlighted the global acceptance and appreciation of UPI as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of technology-driven solutions. He noted that these solutions are creating value beyond borders and strengthening global partnerships for shared growth and prosperity.
During his visit to Greece, Goyal met with Eurobank’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Fokian Karavias to discuss enhancing the India-Greece economic partnership.
“We encouraged Greek companies to invest in India and explored cooperation opportunities in manufacturing and infrastructure development sectors,” Goyal stated.
The minister also witnessed a live demonstration of the UPI service at Eurobank’s headquarters in Athens, attended by Eurobank’s CEO Fokian Karavias and Sanjay Tugainait, CEO of Fairfax Digital Services.
Goyal remarked that this launch marks another significant achievement in the global expansion of India’s digital payment system.
Earlier, he addressed the India-Greece Business Forum alongside Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Theoharis, where he engaged with members of the Indian diaspora present at the event.
In his address, Goyal emphasized India’s robust economic growth, stable macroeconomic conditions, and ongoing economic progress, which present substantial investment and trade opportunities for Greece.
He also mentioned that the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could open new avenues for trade, investment, and economic cooperation.
The minister underscored the immense potential for collaboration in various key sectors between the two nations, urging Greek entrepreneurs and investors to engage in co-manufacturing, co-investment, and partnerships with India.
He concluded that such initiatives would invigorate investment, trade relations, and shared prosperity between the two countries.
