Indian Railways Approves Kavach Safety Project for Ahmedabad Division

New Delhi, June 15: Indian Railways has approved the installation of ‘Kavach’ version 4.0 across 598 kilometers of track in 48 block sections of the Ahmedabad Division under the Western Railway, as part of its efforts to enhance safety. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹140 crore.

Previously, the ‘Kavach’ system had already been approved for a 702-kilometer route in the Ahmedabad Division. With this new approval, the remaining sections of the division will also be included in the Kavach system, paving the way for the widespread deployment of this indigenous train safety technology throughout the division.

This initiative is part of a broader program aimed at providing Kavach across the remaining routes of Indian Railways, supported by a long-term development (LTD) based communication backbone.

The ‘Kavach’ system is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance operational safety. It helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applies brakes when necessary to avoid unsafe situations, controls train speed in critical conditions, and significantly reduces the risk of collisions.

Indian Railways is expanding the Kavach system across its entire network as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen safety and modernize train operations.

Recently approved projects also include the installation of onboard Kavach equipment in 232 locomotives of Southern Railway at a cost of ₹208.81 crore. This proposal is part of a comprehensive initiative to implement Kavach across the remaining routes of Indian Railways, with a total estimated cost of ₹27,693 crore for the communication backbone.

Under this program, a sub-allocation of ₹2,950 crore has been earmarked for Southern Railway. The current work proposed under this allocation includes the installation of ‘Kavach’ version 4.0 equipment on locomotives.

Similarly, Indian Railways has approved ₹176.7699 crore for providing optical fiber cables to support the implementation of the ‘Kavach’ system on the North Central Railway and to improve communication infrastructure on high-density routes.
