New Delhi, March 6: The Indian Navy has deployed its resources to assist in a search and rescue operation following a distress signal from the Iranian vessel IRIS Dena.
According to reports, an emergency message was received by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Colombo (MRCC) from IRIS Dena in the early hours of March 4. The Sri Lankan Navy reported that the ship was operating approximately 20 nautical miles west of Galle, within Sri Lanka’s search and rescue (SAR) area.
Upon receiving the information, the Indian Navy promptly initiated a search and rescue operation. A long-range maritime patrol aircraft was dispatched on March 4 at 10 AM to bolster the search efforts led by Sri Lanka. Additionally, another aircraft capable of dropping life rafts was put on standby for immediate deployment.
Meanwhile, INS Tarangini, stationed in the nearby area, was also deployed to assist in the rescue operations and reached the search area by 4 PM on March 4. By that time, the Sri Lankan Navy and other agencies were already conducting search and rescue operations.
The Indian Navy’s INS Ikshak has also set sail from Kochi to further strengthen the search efforts, continuing the humanitarian search for missing personnel following the maritime incident.
Coordination between Indian and Sri Lankan authorities regarding the search and rescue operation remains ongoing.
