New Delhi, March 17: The central government announced on Tuesday that India has begun importing LPG from several countries, including the United States. They confirmed that the supply within the country remains stable, with no reports of gas shortages from any LPG distributors.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of Marketing and Oil Refinery at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated during a press briefing that most of the LPG is being sourced from Gulf nations.
Sharma remarked, “Our oil companies have started importing LPG from the USA. The government is making every effort to diversify the sources of LPG.”
She further added, “Due to increased diversification, we are receiving more crude oil today.”
With states resuming distribution activities, the supply of commercial LPG has also been partially restored.
To alleviate pressure on domestic LPG demand, the use of alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal has commenced.
Sharma noted that the spike in demand due to panic is decreasing, and there has been a drop in bookings. On March 13, there were 8.9 million bookings, which have now reduced to 7 million.
She emphasized that the LPG refill distribution rate remains consistent with pre-crisis levels and urged consumers to avoid hoarding and black market purchases.
According to the ministry, fuel availability remains stable, refineries are operating at full capacity, and there is a sufficient stock of petrol and diesel.
Sharma assured, “No LPG distributor is facing a fuel shortage, and supply to consumers continues smoothly.” Additionally, the trend towards digital platforms has improved booking processes.
Meanwhile, the Indian-flagged LPG tanker ‘Nanda Devi’ arrived at the Vadinar port in Gujarat on Tuesday, becoming the second LPG carrier to reach the western coast this week. The previous day, the ‘Shivalik’ had docked at the Mundra port.
Both vessels are delivering crucial LPG supplies to India after navigating the perilous route through the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic has been disrupted due to ongoing tensions between Iran, the USA, and Israel.
