Chikmagalur, March 17: In a remarkable ruling, a court in Karnataka’s Chikmagalur district has mandated a unique form of community service for a young man caught riding a motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. The court instructed Ranjit Kumar, a resident of Bisalehalli village, to stand by the roadside holding a board displaying traffic rules.
Ranjit was apprehended for riding his motorcycle while intoxicated. During the hearing, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Kadur opted for community service instead of a traditional fine.
As per the court’s directive, Ranjit was required to display the traffic rules board at Maravanjy Circle/Malleshwar Circle from 10 AM to 5 PM on Tuesday. He admitted his mistake during the proceedings.
To ensure compliance with the order, police personnel were deployed at the location, and a report was requested after 5 PM. Ranjit was seen at the designated spot holding the traffic rules board, monitored by a police officer.
Notably, a similar case recently occurred in Sulya, where a young man was sentenced to stand at major intersections holding safety signs for 15 days, in addition to facing a fine and a three-month suspension of his driving license.
Furthermore, in October 2025, a court in Udupi sentenced three individuals to clean toilets for misbehaving while intoxicated in the court premises.
