Kolkata, March 17: The Bagnao Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, established after the 2009 delimitation, has become a focal point in the lead-up to the upcoming assembly elections. Previously part of the Barasat parliamentary constituency, the area has long been dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Located in the North 24 Parganas district, a portion of the Bagnao region also extends into Nadia district. This parliamentary constituency encompasses seven assembly seats: Kalyani, Harinaghat, Bagda, Bagnao North, Bagnao South, Gaighat, and Swarupnagar, all of which are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC). This reservation underscores the area’s significant social and political importance.
Political analysts suggest that the performance of these seven seats in the assembly elections could determine the political landscape of the entire region. While TMC has historically maintained dominance in Lok Sabha elections, the BJP made significant inroads after 2019. The BJP is now working to capitalize on this momentum in the assembly elections.
Bagnao and its surrounding areas are considered a stronghold of the Matua community, which plays a decisive role in electoral politics. This community, which settled here after the 1947 partition, numbers in the millions and has a direct impact on several seats in North and South 24 Parganas. Consequently, all major parties are vying for the support of this community.
Demographic data further highlights the importance of this seat. Approximately 75% of the population is rural, with over 40% belonging to Scheduled Castes. Thus, social dynamics could prove crucial in the assembly elections.
Looking at past electoral data, TMC maintained a stronghold in 2009 and 2014, winning even in the 2015 by-elections. However, the situation shifted after 2019, with the BJP gaining ground. Meanwhile, the Left parties are also trying to regain their foothold, but the primary contest is currently seen as between TMC and BJP.
In the assembly elections, all seven seats in the Bagnao Lok Sabha constituency could play a pivotal role in shaping not only local but also state-level politics. As a result, this constituency has once again become a matter of prestige for political parties.
