New Delhi, March 18: The Indian Navy is reaffirming its commitment to collaborative maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. In line with this goal, the Navy has launched the second edition of the ‘IOS SAGAR’ initiative.
The ‘IOS SAGAR’ program, initiated by the Indian Navy, is a specialized operational initiative aimed at providing naval personnel from friendly nations with joint training and maritime experience aboard Indian naval vessels. The program commenced on March 16.
According to the Indian Navy, this initiative involves international participants from various countries engaging in onboard activities and professional training. It enhances coordination, cooperation, and understanding of maritime operations among naval forces from different nations. This edition features participation from naval personnel of 16 friendly countries.
The program will kick off with professional training sessions at naval training establishments in Kochi, Kerala. Participants from various navies will be briefed on naval operations, maritime skills, and key aspects of maritime security. Following this, they will join the Indian Navy on a vessel to participate in joint operational activities at sea, gaining practical experience alongside Indian naval forces.
During the voyage, the naval ship will visit various ports, fostering dialogue with regional navies and maritime agencies. These activities aim to strengthen professional relationships, exchange best practices, and develop a deeper understanding of shared maritime challenges.
Notably, earlier this year in February, the Indian Navy chaired the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, ensuring participation from 16 member countries in this edition. This initiative advances India’s long-term maritime cooperation policy.
It embodies the Indian government’s vision of security and development for all in the region (SAGAR) and strengthens a comprehensive framework for security in oceanic areas. The Navy believes this initiative further solidifies India’s active role in promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
