New Delhi, June 12: The central government is dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of Indian seafarers, according to an official statement. The government collaborates with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Navy, Indian missions abroad, maritime administrations of friendly nations, shipping companies, seafarer welfare organizations, and other relevant parties to provide timely assistance to Indian seafarers in need.
Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of every Indian seafarer. He stated, “All relevant ministries, agencies, and Indian missions abroad are working in coordination to ensure timely assistance and support when required.”
Recent incidents involving commercial vessels have highlighted the increasing threats faced by maritime transport. Reports indicate that the medium-range tanker MT Setebelo, flying the Palauan flag, was attacked by missiles approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar Port in Oman. The vessel had a total of 28 crew members on board, including 24 Indian seafarers.
The Seafarers Welfare Fund Society (SWFS), operating under the Directorate General of Shipping, is prepared to provide eligible seafarers and their families with welfare benefits, financial assistance, and other essential support. As part of its established procedures, the SWFS has decided to grant a financial aid of 1 million rupees to the families of deceased seafarers.
Meanwhile, the government has instructed all relevant agencies to remain vigilant and prepared to address any emergencies involving Indian seafarers or maritime interests of India. The Directorate General of Shipping has advised all Indian seafarers working on Indian and foreign-flagged vessels to exercise special caution when navigating through conflict-affected maritime areas.
Shipping operators, ship managers, and shipping companies have also been urged to strictly adhere to existing maritime security regulations, continuously monitor the situation, and comply with guidelines issued by the Government of India and international authorities.
The government has directed all parties involved to promptly report any incidents concerning Indian seafarers to the Directorate General of Shipping, ensuring timely intervention and necessary support and coordination.
