Indian Government Approves Three Major Railway Multi-Tracking Projects

New Delhi, May 6: The Economic Affairs Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three railway projects worth approximately ₹23,437 crores. The approved projects include the third and fourth lines from Nagda to Mathura, Guntakal to Wadi, and Burhwal to Sitapur.

Enhancing railway line capacity will significantly improve transportation. This initiative will boost the operational efficiency and service reliability of Indian Railways. The multi-tracking proposal aims to streamline operations and reduce congestion. These projects align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a new India, focusing on self-reliance through comprehensive regional development, thereby increasing employment and self-employment opportunities.

These projects are part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasizes integrated planning and stakeholder consultation to enhance multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency. They will ensure seamless movement of people, goods, and services.

Spanning 19 districts across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, these three projects will extend the current network of Indian Railways by approximately 901 kilometers.

The proposed multi-tracking project will improve connectivity for around 4,161 villages, benefiting a population of nearly 8.3 million.

The capacity enhancement will improve rail connectivity to several major tourist destinations across the country, including Mahakaleshwar, Ranthambore National Park, Kuno National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Mathura, Vrindavan, and various temples.

These projects are essential for transporting goods such as coal, food grains, cement, oil, iron and steel, iron ore, containers, and fertilizers. The capacity enhancement efforts are expected to yield an additional freight capacity of approximately 60 million tons annually. As a sustainable and energy-efficient mode of transport, railways will help achieve climate goals, reduce logistics costs, decrease oil imports by 370 million liters, and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.85 billion kilograms, equivalent to planting 70 million trees.
