Indian Foreign Minister Discusses Geopolitical Landscape with Finnish President

Helsinki, June 12: Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar participated in a panel discussion on “Emerging Powers and New Geopolitical Competition” alongside Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh during the Kultarenta talks. They addressed the current global situation as well. During this event, Jaishankar also met with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

Jaishankar expressed his pleasure at meeting President Stubb on the social media platform X, stating, “Happy to meet President Alexander Stubb during the Kultarenta talks.”

Both Jaishankar and Stubb exchanged views on the changing geopolitical landscape, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

At the Kultarenta discussions, Jaishankar highlighted that ongoing conflicts are raising costs and causing changes across regions. There was a consensus that the international community must continue efforts to mitigate these outcomes and create conditions for diplomacy.

He stressed the need for greater resilience and redundancy in a world marked by instability, as well as the importance of de-risking supply chains and enhancing diversity.

Jaishankar reiterated that India’s energy options are determined by national interests, based on affordability and availability. He underscored the significance of India’s relations with the Gulf region, which are founded on strong people-to-people ties, energy cooperation, and growing strategic and defense partnerships.

He noted that the nature of warfare is rapidly evolving, with new technologies, weapons, and tactics coexisting with traditional methods, opening new avenues for India-EU defense and strategic cooperation.

Jaishankar also mentioned that India and the EU completed negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) this year, signing frameworks for strategic and defense partnerships as well as comprehensive mobility cooperation, reflecting the deepening relationship.

Additionally, Jaishankar met with UAE Foreign Minister Nusseibeh to review progress in their comprehensive strategic partnership and discuss regional issues of mutual interest.
