India Wins Historic Bronze at AVC Mens Cup, Praised by Sports Minister

Ahmedabad, June 28: The Indian men’s volleyball team achieved a remarkable feat on Sunday by defeating the reigning champions Bahrain 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17) in the bronze medal playoff match held in Ahmedabad. This victory marks the first medal for the host nation at the AVC Men’s Cup. Central Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi commended the team for their historic performance.

In celebration of this achievement, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya took to social media platform X to express, “A historic day for Indian volleyball. Congratulations to our men’s volleyball team for winning the bronze medal at the AVC Men’s Cup 2026. The entire nation is proud of you.”

Meanwhile, Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi also shared his thoughts on X, stating, “A historic bronze medal for Team India. For the first time, our men’s volleyball team has won a medal at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Cup, achieved right here in Ahmedabad. The city not only hosted this tournament but also inspired it. Jai Hind.”

This historic win concluded a memorable tournament for India. After a narrow semifinal loss to Indonesia, the team made a stunning comeback, securing a podium finish for the first time in the tournament’s history. Just a day prior, India came close to reaching the finals but lost a thrilling match against a top Asian volleyball team 2-3 (25-15, 24-26, 20-25, 25-19, 13-15).

In the bronze medal playoff against the current champions Bahrain, India showcased an impressive performance, winning 3-1 and achieving a historic milestone by securing the first AVC Men’s Cup medal for the country. This bronze medal represents a significant step forward for Indian volleyball, highlighting the national team’s continuous progress and raising hopes for future international tournaments.
